How the formula works
LDL = Total Cholesterol − HDL − (Triglycerides ÷ 5)
- Calculated LDL uses the Friedewald formula — only reliable when triglycerides are below 400 mg/dL
- Non-HDL Cholesterol = Total Cholesterol − HDL
- TC:HDL Ratio = Total Cholesterol ÷ HDL — a commonly used indicator (below 3.5 is generally favorable, above 5 is considered high)
